I took 38 volunteer nurses into the Scutari hospital
1854 — 1855
Situation
Britain and France were fighting Russia alongside the Ottoman Empire; reports of the conditions for the wounded at Scutari, opposite Constantinople, reached Britain and Sidney Herbert authorised my mission.
Action
In 1854 I led 38 volunteer nurses and 15 Catholic nuns to the British military hospital at Scutari, fixed neglected hygiene and supply, introduced handwashing, and pressed for the reforms that cut deaths.
Outcome
Hospital deaths were an organisation problem before they were a medical one: hygiene, supply and ventilation decided who lived.
