I found genes that jump: Ac and Ds in maize
1944 — 1951
Situation
Systematic studies at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on unstable, mosaic inheritance in maize seed, followed across generations of controlled crosses and read under the microscope.
Action
From 1944 I traced the mosaic colour of maize kernels to two interacting loci, Dissociation (Ds) and Activator (Ac), and in 1948 showed both could transpose on the chromosome — the research that founded the science of mobile genetic elements.
Outcome
Careful crosses plus microscopy can reveal a mechanism no one is looking for; my research showed the genome is not a static set of instructions.
