Design of AC systems powering modern grid
4 milestones
Engineered alternating-current systems that enabled large-scale electric power distribution.
Accumulated roughly 300 patents and served as AIEE vice-president, receiving major recognition.
Developed the Tesla coil, enabling high-voltage, high-frequency experiments and wireless demos.
Created a practical polyphase induction motor that started without a commutator, advancing machinery.
In 1893 Edward Dean Adams asked me to assess every competing system for transmitting power from Niagara Falls. I advised two-phase AC; the contract went to Westinghouse on that advice.
I am an electrical engineer, inventor and futurist. My engineering work on the induction motor and the polyphase system helped design the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply.
