I put a man on trial without naming his crime
1914 — 1915
Situation
I wrote the novel while working as a trained lawyer; I finished the final chapter but not the whole book. Brod published it after my death.
Action
In 1914 I began The Trial: a man is arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, and the nature of his crime is revealed neither to him nor to the reader. Its parable Before the Law was in print by 1915.
Outcome
Shows how legal training can feed creative literature: the procedure is accurate, so the nightmare is believable.
