I teach philosophy and astronomy in Alexandria, and I preserve mathematical knowledge through commentary: on Diophantus's thirteen-volume Arithmetica, on Apollonius's conic sections, and an edition of Ptolemy's Almagest.
My work is teaching and keeping knowledge usable: I make the hardest mathematical texts of my time readable for the students who come to learn from me.
Alexandria, in the Roman province of Egypt, is a major centre of learning. I teach in its school as a Neoplatonist philosopher, astronomer and mathematician, and I am known in my lifetime as a great teacher and a wise counselor.
