Ada Lovelace

I am a mathematician and writer. My work on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, a proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, produced the first published computer program and the first account of what such a machine could do beyond calculation.

I wrote the first published program for a computer

I saw that a calculating engine is really a machine for symbols, which made me the first to describe computing technology as programming, not arithmetic.

Babbage designed the engines; few scientists of the 1840s grasped the Analytical Engine and the British establishment showed little interest. My translation and Notes A–G explained it in writing.
